Histological impairment of the mitral valve in an adult patient affected by cor triatriatum sinistrum

چکیده
In the case of cor triatriatum, as in other congenital abnormalities, especially if discovered in adult age, concomitant pathology of the cardiac valves should be carefully investigated. This demands an adequate pre-operative study, today possible with the modern imaging techniques. Here, we report a 19-year-old woman operated for a cor tiatriatum sinister; the typical fenestrated diaphragm was excised from the left atrium. The mitral valve, characterized by a moderate-to-severe incompetence, was also excised and substituted. The histological examination revealed an altered valve structure: All its layers were completely replaced by homogeneous fibrous tissue. The atrial diaphragm showed the same histological features. About the pathogenesis of this complex disease, involving different components of the left atrium, we can suppose a unique congenital aetiology.

M mode and cross sectional echocardiography was carried out in three cases of cor triatriatum sinistrum (two infants and one adult). In two cases a peculiar double arch appearance, not previously reported, was found. All three cases were referred for surgery without cardiac catheterisation, and the diagnosis proved to be correct. The characteristic echocardiographic feature of cor triatriatum i...
متن کاملAdult Cor Triatriatum Sinistrum as an Unusual Cause of Embolic Stroke
Cor Triatriatum Sinistrum is a congenital anomaly in which the left atrium is divided into 2 parts by a fold of tissue, a membrane, or a fibromuscular band. Classically, the proximal (upper or superior) portion of the left atrium receives the venous blood, whereas the distal (lower or inferior) portion is in contact with the atrioventricular valve and contains the atrial appendage and the true ...

Introduction. Cor triatriatum is a rare congenital heart disease found incidentally in children. Although cor triatriatum can be an incidental finding in asymptomatic adults; it is extremely rare to find elderly patients without symptoms and is unique in a long distance runner. Case Presentation. We present the case of an 83-year-old long-distance runner with cor triatriatum sinistrum and atria...
متن کاملCor Triatriatum Sinistrum Presenting as Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease A Rare Case Report
Cor triatriatum is an acyanotic congenital heart disease. We present a rare case of cor triatriatum sinistrum in a 6-month-old female infant who was presented with cyanosis and failure to thrive. The 2D transthoracic echocardiography and the Doppler color flow imaging showed a proximal venous chamber communicating to the distal left atrium through restrictive opening to the low-pressure, dis...
متن کاملAdult cor triatriatum sinistrum: a rare cause of ischaemic stroke
A 55-year-old male was referred to the cardiologist because of the occurrence of two ischaemic strokes within five months’ time in the absence of documented atrial fibrillation. At echocardiography, a membrane was visualised in the left atrium (cor triatriatum) (Fig. 1a). Since no other abnormalities were detected, the cor triatriatum was held responsible for the cardioembolic stroke. Surgical ...
